ERIC TAM
Homegrown Success
Long before Eric Tam became one of Boston's most respected real estate professionals, he was simply a Newton kid growing up in a close-knit family where hard work wasn't something that needed to be taught. It was simply how life was lived. His parents worked tirelessly to provide for the family, while his grandparents played an equally important role in raising him. Surrounded by multiple generations under one roof, Eric learned early that family isn't just important, it's the foundation for everything else.
Those lessons would eventually shape both the man he became and the business he built.
After graduating from Babson College, Eric launched his career as an IT recruiter. Fresh out of school, he thrived in the fast-paced corporate sales world, spending hours every day making cold calls and quickly finding success. But after the events of September 11, corporate America changed. Micromanagement replaced independence, and the career that once energized him no longer felt right.
Around that same time, life delivered a far more important priority.
Eric's grandfather was diagnosed with lung cancer, and what began as helping for a few days quickly became more than a year of serving as his primary caregiver. Looking back, Eric doesn't speak about that season with regret. Instead, he views it as one of the most meaningful chapters of his life. Caring for his grandfather deepened his appreciation for family, sacrifice, and being present for the people who matter most.
When his grandfather passed away, Eric's father encouraged him to consider real estate. It wasn't a glamorous time to enter the industry. He earned his license in 2008 just as the housing market collapsed.
Most people thought he was crazy.
His first year consisted of rentals, first-time buyers, and whatever opportunities he could find. By the end of the year, he had barely made enough money to justify staying in the business. But Eric wasn't interested in shortcuts. He had been raised to keep working, even when the outcome wasn't guaranteed.
"I just told myself to keep going."
That persistence eventually led him to join the Bushari Group, where he spent the next decade helping grow the team into one of the area's most respected names before transitioning to Compass through the company's acquisition in 2018. Along the way, Eric expanded into development projects, off-market opportunities, investment properties, and luxury sales throughout Greater Boston. Today, his business spans everything from first-time homebuyers to international investors and large-scale developments.
Despite the growth, his philosophy has remained remarkably simple.
"I focus on doing the work. The numbers take care of themselves."
Rather than chasing recognition, Eric believes consistency wins over time. It's a mindset that dates back to his recruiting days, when every salesperson's production was publicly displayed for the entire office to see. While many became consumed by the scoreboard, Eric learned to ignore it and simply focus on serving people well.
That same philosophy continues to define his business today.
Away from real estate, however, Eric's favorite title isn't Realtor. It's Dad.
He is the proud father of three children, two daughters and a young son, and while his business keeps him busy, family has always remained his greatest priority. Much of that revolves around something many people don't expect: cooking.
Ironically, Eric didn't grow up cooking alongside his grandparents. His passion for the kitchen developed later while caring for them and eventually became something he carried into parenthood. Wanting his children to grow up eating healthy, home-cooked meals, he began preparing breakfast and dinner every single day. What started as a responsibility slowly became a hobby and, eventually, his favorite way to unwind after a long day.
Cooking became less about the food and more about creating moments together. In fact, when Eric first joined social media, his pages were filled almost entirely with photos of the meals he was making for his family. Later, when he shifted toward posting more real estate content, clients and colleagues began asking the same question: "Where's the food?" It was a lighthearted reminder that while people appreciated his expertise in real estate, they had also come to know the man behind the business.
Today, even with a demanding real estate career, he still enjoys being the one preparing meals for his family. His children have grown older, and while they may not appreciate every homemade dinner the way they once did, Eric smiles knowing those everyday moments matter more than they realize. It's another way he shows up for the people he loves.
He remains just as close with his parents and sister, continuing the family-first values that shaped his childhood. Those relationships, along with the lessons learned from his grandparents, continue to influence every decision he makes, both personally and professionally.
More than eighteen years after taking a chance on real estate during one of the industry's most uncertain moments, Eric has built a career rooted in trust, consistency, and relationships. Yet ask him what matters most, and the answer has never changed. It's family. Whether he's negotiating a multimillion-dollar development, preparing breakfast before the school day begins, or gathering everyone around the dinner table at night, the goal has always been the same: to build something lasting for the people he loves most.
