A Dedicated Mortgage Loan Officer with a Passion for Service

In the mortgage industry, there is no substitute for service. Communication with clients,
exceeding their expectations, and being there from start to finish are essential in today’s times.
Even better is when someone understands the challenges that REALTORS® face firsthand. Enter Lucy Thornton, a Residential Mortgage Loan Officer at Capital Area REALTORS® Federal Credit Union.
With a rich background in real estate and a deep understanding of the needs and challenges
faced by homebuyers, Lucy brings a unique perspective to her role as a lender. Her journey in
the real estate industry began in 2006 when she became a licensed REALTOR®, and since then,
she has transitioned into the lending side of the business, where she thrives on building
relationships and helping clients make one of the most important decisions of their lives.
“I am the lender that I wanted as a REALTOR®,” explains Lucy. She prides herself on her
communication, follow up and availability. She comments, “Those are all things that I wanted as a REALTOR®.” Drawing from her own experiences, she ensures that her clients receive the
support and guidance they need throughout the loan process.
From REALTOR® to Lender
“I’ve always loved real estate,” comments Lucy. “I've loved houses as long as I can remember.”
She got her real estate license while living in Oklahoma with her husband Jim. A fan of
Monopoly, she found real estate fun. Jim served on Active Duty.
After working in Oklahoma for 4 ½ years, Jim was deployed to Germany before being asked to
serve in their home estate of Texas. That’s where Lucy’s interests were piqued about real
estate.
“I got to see the role one on one with lenders,” she explains. Her eyes were opened to the
relationship between the REALTOR® and the lender. “It wasn’t transactional. They were part
of a team with the same goal in mind.” She joked with her lender friends, “I’m going to come to
your side one day.” Her words came true years later.
Following Texas, Lucy and Jim were stationed in Hawaii, Korea, and Georgia. That’s when Lucy
decided to recreate herself, eager to become a lender. She shares, “In February 2022, I got my
license. I do love it, especially the relationship side of it. I get to be a part of the most important
decision of someone’s life.”
Expertise in VA Loans and National Lending
As a national lender, Lucy has access to lending options in all 50 states, which is essential for
her diverse book of business. She specializes in VA loans and possesses personal experience and expertise in this area. Having navigated the VA loan process herself and working closely with REALTORS® in the VA space, she understands the intricacies and nuances of these loans, making her an invaluable resource for military homebuyers.
Popular Pastimes
Outside of her professional life, Lucy enjoys spending time with her family, including her three
boys. “I love to travel,” smiles Lucy with enthusiasm. “We have an RV and go glamping with
friends and family.”
Lucy, who has traveled extensively, loved every minute of seeing the world. “I loved Hawaii,”
she raves, “especially the people I met.” It was a slice of paradise with swimming with dolphins
on Mondays, sailing on Tuesdays, and hiking mountains on Wednesdays. This experience was
nothing short of priceless for this go-getter.
Giving Back
Lucy is deeply committed to community service and giving back. She understands the
challenges of relocation and is empathetic toward military families who go through
the complex process of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) moves.
Jim, an ROTC instructor at Georgia Southern University, loves being able to teach and guide
others. “He’s very involved with his cadets,” remarks Lucy. “He is helping shape the future of
the Army. It’s quite an adventure serving as his wife and being part of such a community with
such camaraderie. It is honorable to walk among the men who are willing to be deployed at any
moment.” Jim has been deployed three times.
Exceeding Expectations
Lucy's journey from REALTOR® to Residential Mortgage Loan Officer is a testament to her
adaptability, passion for service, and commitment to building relationships. With her unique
perspective, expertise in VA loans, and dedication to providing exceptional customer

mortgage process and helping them achieve their homeownership dreams. Her love for people,
