For Joseph Gordon, flooring isn’t just a trade — it’s a decades-long commitment to doing right by people. As the owner of The Flooring Source, LLC, Joseph has built a business that thrives on referrals, repeat clients, and the simple principle that good service speaks for itself.
“All of our business is by referral,” Joseph says. “I not only have to make the customer happy, I have to make the person who referred me happy.” That mindset has guided Joseph for the last 36 years, helping him stand out in an industry where trust and responsiveness are everything.
Headquartered in St. Louis, The Flooring Source supplies and installs all types of flooring, sands and refinishes hardwood floors, and offers carpet cleaning services. But Joseph’s passion goes beyond the materials — it's about making the experience seamless and dependable for everyone involved.
“Our ability to respond to the needs of our customers quickly and efficiently” is what he says sets his company apart. “Real estate agents appreciate the speed we are able to give them when they are wanting to get a house on the market.”
Joseph is especially proud of his carpet cleaning work, a specialty backed by his IICRC certification. “Not all carpet cleaners are,” he notes, emphasizing the importance of being trained by an organization dedicated solely to industry best practices. His ideal clients? “Existing clients who tell their friends.”
For real estate professionals, Joseph is the kind of partner who shows up when they need someone most. “Agents want to get a house on the market as soon as possible,” he explains. “We are able to respond quickly for their clients.” That reliability has made The Flooring Source a quiet but essential name among top producers in the region.
Joseph didn’t originally set out to run a flooring business. A St. Louis native, he attended Missouri State University, where he swam competitively on the college team. He went on to become a certified elementary teacher in Missouri, teaching for four years. Then came a turn toward commercial interiors with Famous Barr, where he notably won the bid for furniture at the Harry S Truman office building.
From there, the path took another turn — carpet cleaning, then flooring sales. On Rosh Hashanah in 1989, The Flooring Source was born. “Attention to client needs,” he says, has been the biggest factor in his long-term success. “Never trying to take advantage of a client.”
Joseph defines success as “constant referrals and many long time clients,” a simple yet powerful benchmark in an industry where relationships are everything. His unofficial slogan — “The Flooring Source, your source for floors” — reflects that clarity.
It’s not a one-man show. His main installer, Jimmy Bishop, has worked with him for about 20 years, a professional partnership built on trust and consistency.
Outside of work, Joseph is a family man at heart. He’s been married to his wife Jan for 49 years. They have three sons and seven grandchildren. “We like to take short trips in our RV,” he says. “I enjoy golf.”
Balancing the demands of business with family life isn’t always easy. “It is tough,” Joseph admits. But he and Jan make it a point to take time away. “In the warmer months we try to RV for 4-5 days a month just to get away.”
When asked what he values most about being part of the Real Producers network, his answer is direct: “The events. Business is all about relationships.”
And that’s really what Joseph Gordon has built his career on — not flashy advertising or gimmicks, but relationships. “Family is important to me,” he says. “I will always try to do the best for your clients.”
