Gratitude, Perspective, and Purpose
Reflecting on the relationships and moments that make this industry meaningful
As we move toward the end of another year, I find myself reflecting a little more than usual.
My term as President of St. Charles REALTORS® will come to an end on December 31. While there is still work to do and another month ahead of us, this season has given me an opportunity to think about what this year has meant and, perhaps more importantly, what makes this profession so meaningful.
It isn't the number of homes sold, awards received, or transactions closed.
It's the people.
Serving as President has given me the opportunity to see our real estate community from a different perspective. I've watched REALTORS® give their time to committees, attend meetings, advocate for property owners, support charitable causes, mentor other agents, and work to make our profession better. I've watched our affiliate partners step forward again and again to support our members and the communities we serve.
Most of that work happens without recognition. It happens because people care.
That gives me tremendous gratitude for the opportunity I've had to serve alongside so many talented professionals.
Real estate can be demanding. We work nights, weekends, holidays, and sometimes during moments when our own families would probably prefer to have our full attention. It is easy to become focused on the next appointment, the next contract, or the next closing.
Every once in a while, though, we need to remember why we do it.
We get to help people through some of life's biggest transitions. We hand someone the keys to their first home. We help families move closer together. We guide people through difficult decisions. We help someone sell the home where they raised their children and begin a new chapter. Those aren't simply transactions. They are moments in people's lives, and we are fortunate enough to be trusted with them.
Leadership has reminded me of something similar. Titles are temporary. What matters is what we do with the opportunity while we have it and the relationships we build along the way.
As I begin winding down my year as President, I am grateful for the conversations, the challenges, the friendships, and the people who have helped make this year meaningful.
And I am reminded that our purpose is bigger than any individual transaction or position we hold.
If we serve people well, support one another, protect the professionalism of our industry, and leave things a little better than we found them, then we have done something worthwhile.
For that opportunity, and for the people who make it possible, I am truly grateful.
