JAN CROWLEY

Purpose Through People

Growing up in Texas and New Mexico, Jan Crowley was the quiet observer in the room. Shy and introverted as a child, she spent more time studying people than trying to be the center of attention. Even then, she was fascinated by what motivates others and why they make the decisions they do.

Those early observations would eventually become the foundation of a career built not only on real estate, but on understanding people.

“The quiet ones are usually paying the most attention,” Jan shares. “I wanted to understand why people make the decisions they do and what really motivates them.”

Life presented its share of challenges, but Jan believes those experiences ultimately became her greatest strengths. Rather than allowing hardship to define her, she says it taught her empathy and resilience.

“Life was never easy but I've learned to alchemize that pain into purpose,” she reflects. “Every challenge has taught me to understand the core issue and how to meet people exactly where they are with compassion.”

Before entering real estate in 2015, Jan served as an Arabic linguist in the U.S. Army. The experience sharpened her discipline, adaptability, and communication skills while creating lifelong relationships that remain meaningful today. She and her family also spent a decade living throughout Europe and the United Kingdom while raising their children before ultimately relocating to Maryland, which has been home since 2012.

“I knew we needed to transition back to the States and I wanted a career where I could build real relationships and make a tangible impact in people's lives,” she says. “Real estate gave me exactly that. I now help so many of my fellow service members find homes using their VA loan. It’s incredibly rewarding.”

Her path into the industry began while purchasing her first home in Maryland. Captivated by every step of the process, Jan immersed herself in learning the business and earned her real estate license just two years later at the encouragement of her Realtor.

“I wasn't very successful at first but I eventually found my bearings,” she says. “Now I can't imagine my life without this crazy roller coaster.”

Today, Jan is with Compass, where she leads a team with a unique philosophy. Rather than building agents who remain dependent on her, she hopes to help each one develop into a successful solo professional if that is their goal.

“I thoroughly enjoy watching them grow and learn,” she says.

Jan's passion for learning extends far beyond real estate. She enjoys studying psychology, business strategy, and personal development, often turning new ideas into practical ventures. She founded The Aligned Agent, LLC, creating coaching workbooks for real estate professionals, and recently became a host on American Dream TV, giving her another opportunity to highlight the local businesses that make Maryland unique.

Real estate, she says, has become the platform that allows her to serve people on multiple levels.

“The house is important,” Jan explains. “But the human being is priceless.”

That philosophy influences every client interaction. While many agents focus primarily on market expertise, Jan believes understanding human behavior is equally important.

“Most Realtors become experts in the market,” she says. “I've spent just as much time becoming a student of human nature.”

Instead of relying on pressure, Jan focuses on education, thoughtful questions, and helping clients gain confidence in their own decisions.

“I believe the best decisions come from clarity, not pressure,” she says. “Buying a home changes your address. Learning to trust yourself changes your life.”

Much of that perspective comes from her own personal growth. Looking back, Jan says overcoming limiting beliefs has been more challenging than navigating any housing market.

“Success isn't just about learning contracts or negotiation,” she says. “It's about learning yourself.”

Her experiences have also shaped the way she approaches family life. Jan and her husband, Jason Turner, Broker-Owner of Navigator Mortgage Brokers, have four children — Lara, Blake, Norah, and Gavin — and two cats, Mowgli and Captain Kerflufflepants. Together they enjoy traveling, discovering new restaurants, playing games and Mahjong, and spending time around the dinner table.

As she looks toward the future, Jan hopes to continue expanding The Aligned Agent while providing an even higher level of service to her clients and mentoring more agents along the way.

Her advice for aspiring agents reflects the lessons she's learned throughout her own journey.

“I've come to know, in my bones, that your business is simply a reflection of the relationship you have with yourself,” she says. “Authenticity will forever and always be the key that unlocks everything for you.”

It's a message that aligns with the personal motto guiding both her life and career: “What you let go of heals you.”
