The REALTOR® Foundation Update

We All Need a Safe Place to Call Home

As the summer sun begins to beat down on central Indiana, it becomes even more essential for everyone to have a safe place to call home. While you may associate summer with beach vacations, poolside relaxation, and outdoor activities, it is important to remember that not everyone has the luxury of enjoying these experiences. For many individuals and families, having a safe and stable home during the summer is crucial for their well-being and overall quality of life. Sadly, many will go without the protection and safety of adequate shelter entirely.
A safe home protects from the scorching heat and other weather extremes that can occur during the summer. Excessive heat can lead to heat-related illnesses, such as heatstroke and dehydration, particularly for vulnerable populations like the elderly, children, and those with pre-existing health conditions. Those experiencing homelessness in our communities also experience these vulnerabilities at much higher rates- the average age of an unhoused person in Indiana is just 7 years old, and many Hoosiers experiencing homelessness also struggle with mental and physical health issues. Wellspring Center, REALTOR® Foundation grantee, serves families in need in Morgan County. Here they give an example of how they serve, especially in the warmer months:
“This couple came in today, down, and out. They both struggle to read and write, so we sat down with them to fill out their service forms. They told us they sleep on the ground, in an alley behind a local restaurant. Both were in desperate need of showers, and they wanted to wash their laundry - all kept in trash bags. It was a privilege to be able serve them.” After starting their laundry, they both picked out groceries from Wellspring’s pantry. The couple received eating utensils and a can opener, neither of which they already had. Each of them was gifted a handmade sleeping mat and a new soft blanket, toiletries, and backpacks for their personal items. “They showered and put on freshly laundered clothes. Above all, they were given a new sense of hope and encouragement.” Wellspring assisted the couple in finding stable housing of their own, out of the heat and away from danger.
A home provides a sense of stability and peace of mind. It serves as a foundation for individuals and families to thrive, learn, and play- imperative factors for mental health and childhood growth. For adults, the home is a place to recharge, bond with family, and exercise self-care. Living in an alley, on the other hand, is a source of constant stress both mentally and physically.
The REALTOR® Foundation believes having a safe place to call home is crucial for everyone, during the summer or any season. We are working to ensure that everyone has access to a secure home for the well-being of individuals and families in our communities. We do this by supporting local nonprofits providing just that- shelter, stability, and care so that our most vulnerable neighbors can heal, grow, and find their path to stability.
